Today's Death At A Funeral Biography: Chris Rock
April 16th 2010 08:30
Well, today is the day, everyone! "Death At A Funeral" makes it's debut! Our featured artist of the day, Chris Rock, was one of the actors that made me really want to see it! (Martin Lawrence was the other one and THE main one, I will profile him tomorrow as well as the movie!) I love Chris' stand-up routines! He reminds me just a little of Jerry Seinfeld, when they touch on subjects, it's funny but then has a sliver of truth, kinda like the song, "Things that make you go, hmmm!"
Date of Birth
7 February 1965, Andrews, South Carolina, USA
Birth Name
Christopher Julius Rock III
Height
5' 11" (1.80 m)
Chris Rock was raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, which is in Brooklyn, New York. He has been in stand-up comedy for over twelve years. He made his big screen debut in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and spent three years on the cast of "Saturday Night Live" (1975). He does commercials for 1-800 Collect and Nike and covered the presidential campaign for the show "Politically Incorrect" (1994). He now lives in Alpine, New Jersey. Chris is the oldest of seven children. He also has a step-brother from his father's first marriage who has spent considerable time in jail. Chris father was a truck driver who died in 1989. Chis says his father was a strict disciplinarian who didn't permit any disobediance or disrespect. Here are some trivia about him:
He was discovered by Eddie Murphy (He OWES him half!) His trademark is his high-pitched delivery (That's one thing that makes him funny!) Was voted the funniest person in America by Entertainment Weekly. Chosen as #5 in Comedy Central's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time (April 2004). Enjoys a wide range of music such as Jay-Z, Red Hot Chili Peppers, DMX, Boy George, Elvis Costello, Eminem and Smashing Pumpkins (I like a wide range as well! Good is good!)
In 1993, Paramount offered him the role of Lamont Sanford in a purposed film update of "Sanford and Son" (1972). He called the idea "insane" and, because of his affection for the late Redd Foxx, lobbied to have the production halted. It was. (Wow! What power!) Points to Eddie Murphy as his role model and inspiration for taking up comedy and acting. Is a fan of the TV series "Seinfeld" (1990) and has been known to make references to the show in many of his stand-up routines (See? I knew it!) Is close friends with Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, David Spade and Mario Joyner. Was good friends with Chris Farley (I loved Chris Farley!)
Was considered for the role of Huggy Bear in Starsky & Hutch (2004). Is a big Woody Allen fan. Attended the opening of Oprah Winfrey's school in South Africa. Has called singer Sade "the most beautiful woman in the world".
And he has been quoted as saying, "I love music. Music is the soundtrack to the crappy movie that is my life."
When asked about his last name, "It's my real name. My mother's name is Rose Rock. It was the worst name as a kid to have. They called me Piece of the Rock, Plymouth Rock, Joe Rockid, and Flintstones. Now they call me MISTER Rock". (I know that's right! Funny!) Check out the FUNNY interview/video!
