Review for The Taking of Pelham 123
March 21st 2010 19:59
I was intrigued by the picture of John Travolta in this movie. Here is Mr. Vinnie Barbarino from Welcome Back, Kotter, Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever, and Danny Zuko from Grease, looking like this? O.K., I know he played Vincent Vega in "Pulp Fiction" but he still LOOKED like the other characters and acted kinda dumb. THIS character looked like an extreme biker dude with the tattoo on his neck, a goatee and he was smart! (He talks a lot about stocks and trading!) He even did a lot of cursing...John, baby, I didn't know you had it in you! I guess John is releasing some of his hurt and anger over the loss of his son and it is working for him! Denzel Washington (The Book of Eli), who usually is the "kick-ass, take no prisoners" guy in his movies, takes a meeker stance with this role.
The movie is about four men led by Bernard Ryder (John Travolta), who board the New York City subway 6 train departed from Pelham Bay Park Station at 1:23 p.m., and proceed to take control of it.
At the same time, we see MTA dispatcher Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) is assigned to the Rail Control Center, due to an ongoing investigation that he took a bribe to recommend a Japanese car manufacturer for the next subway car contract. The group releases the front car from the rest of the train and take the passengers hostage. Ryder and a former MTA train operator named Ramos settle down in the front of the car, while the other hijackers watch the hostages in the back. They demand $10 million in ransom money to be paid within 60 minutes (You can get that out of the ATM, right?) For each minute past the deadline, one passenger will be killed (Eeny, meeny, miny, mo!) Garber and Ryder exchange conversations through the microphone (which provides great cat and mouse antics!) while his men set up a wireless system to enable Ryder to access his laptop in the tunnel to watch the stock market.
Unknown to anyone, one of the passengers has a laptop with a webcam, that fell on the floor at the beginning of the takeover. A live feed of the situation is being transmitted to the passerger's girlfriend whom he was talking to before the situation began (YES!) When she sees what is happening, she provides the live feed to a local television station (We're saved!) After extensive debate, the city agrees to pay Ryder the $10 million ransom and Ryder wants Garber to bring it to him. From the moment the rail car is taken hostage, you are on the edge of your seat! The writing effectively highlights the acting ability of BOTH actors which is good since they are such big stars! The ending is filled with gunfire (of course!) and a stand-off that ends somewhat disappointingly but this movie will leave you with that "everything is alright in the world" feeling. Good movie! (Check out the trailer below, the music is perfect!)
