Review for The Collector

March 18th 2010 06:13

This movie was billed as "from the writer and director of Saw comes "The Collector." ,
(that's Marcus Dunstan, he wrote Saw 4, 5, 6, and yes in production NOW! Saw 7! Can you tell I'm a HUGE Saw fan!!) Of course, this is what prompted me to go see this movie. Mistake, sad but true BIG mistake. For someone who can be as creative and has the ability to tie SEVERAL movies in together so that they make sense, the collector does not make ANY sense! I tend to stay away from movies that I think are like this one....First of all, this movie has only one "big" name (star) and that is Madeline Zima from the t.v. show "The Nanny,"
(she was the LITTLE girl, I emphasized little because baby, "she ain't LITTLE anymore!" I will explain in a minute!) I think that having no major stars in this movie added to the overall creepiness of the film. Kudos, to whoever made the final decision on that (unknown actors need a break somewhere!)

The collector starts off in a home with a weird-looking box in it. There is a guy who is walking through this house and he hears some noise coming from a large, wooden box. He approaches, listens, thinks about it, then decides to open the box. WHAM! A man falls out! Then, the first guy screams, that's it! Next, we see a house that is undergoing renovations. There are a lot of guys buzzing about the house. All kinda shady, creepy looking. And obviously, this family has money. There is one construction worker Arkin (Josh Stewart, whose next film after this was playing the executed criminal in "Law Abiding Citizen.")
who is walking by the youngest daughter's room and she catches his attention. Walking into her room, they talk and he tells her how she reminds him of his daughter. (Very important info, pivotal to the movie!) Later on that evening, we meet his daughter and his wife/girlfriend, maybe she was his ex-wife (at this point, it was a little boring and they seemed like they were mumbling!) Anyway, his "woman" tells him that she is in debt to someone (mumbled, hey, we were in the theater, no rewind!) and that she has to come up with the money by midnight TONIGHT (Damn, can a man get a little more advanced warning?) Well, Arkin tells her that he knows where he can get some money.....fast! (The renovated home, of course!) Arkin tells her that it is rumored to be a very expensive diamond in the safe and he knows someone that can hock it tonight. The family is going out of town because he overheard them discussing it with their older daughter, Jill. (Madeline Zima, she tells the family that she does not want to go on the trip.) He tells her that he can be in and out of the house...Bam! Problem solved! (Yeah, it SHOULD have been that easy and what happens next, I wish it was!!)

Arkin arrives at the house and goes directly to the safe and while he is trying to open it, he hears someone in the house! Now, normally you would assume that it was Jill but alas, it is not! It is "the collector" hard at work! Arkin dodges "the collector" and makes it to the basement where he hears someone moaning....it is the father! (who owns the house.) And he is gruesomely hacked up! Then, Arkin discovers the mother (who is equally disfigured.) Arkin realizes that if the family didn't leave...then where is the youngest daughter? After playing a quick game of cat and mouse (with Saw-type devices that the collector has laid around the house!) and searching for her, he finally makes it out of the house and from what we have just witnessed, you breathe a sigh of relief. Then as Arkin is running away from the house, he sees in the upstairs window...the little girl! (Oh, shit! Don't go back into THAT house, run and get help!)

Of course, he runs into the house because, remember, the little girl reminds him of HIS little girl. He gets the girl, still dodging the Saw-like devices (they are pretty gruesome, but we will get to that in a moment) During all of this, there is a police officer that comes to the house (dies, of course and you are SO disappointed) and then...Jill comes home with her boyfriend, they go inside, and of course make out (she thinks her family is gone!) And boy, do they make out Jill (Madeline Zima has her first naked screen shot, she shows her breasts!) While they are making out, the collector is watching. Finally, Jill sees him and screams. Jill's boyfriend tries to fight him but somehow "the collector" gets the upper hand, pushes him hard into the dining room (which is covered with what appears to be bear traps!" Gruesome! But you ain't seen nothing yet, the best Saw-like device is reserved for Jill. Freaked out by her boyfriend and wondering where her parents and sister are, she is screaming and Arkin is telling her not to touch anything but she doesn't listen and.....you have got to see this one for yourself, Folks! I won't even tell you!

What I will say is, I was so shaken by this film. For starters, I don't like movies featuring uncut, graphic murders (I can watch the local news for that!) Murders that occur for no apparent reason just hits too close to home (I know there are REAL people out there that do this to people and I don't want to have a front row seat..."Hey, let's go hang out with the guy who chops people up...I wonder if he's home tonight!") The ending is good (very creative, good writing!) but disappointing and yes, there could be a part two, which amazingly I want to know what happens! (It's that complicated, Folks!) If you can stomach the gruesomeness (real word? There is no sqiggly line and I like it!) Check this one out!
