Movie Famous - June 2009

Farrah Fawcett 1947-2009

June 25th 2009 18:57
Farrah Fawcett lost her long battle with cancer today June 25 2009, in Los Angeles. The actress was 62.

Born in Corpus Christi Texas, she attended the University of Texas at Austin. While there, she appeared in a photo spread of the "Ten Most Beautiful Coeds". A Hollywood publicist saw the photo spread in "Cashbox" magazine and encouraged her to move to Los Angeles. After working in commercials, she began her film career in 1969 playing the role of Patricia in the movie "Love is a Funny Thing". Ms. Fawcett shot to international fame in 1976 playing the part of Jill Monroe in the series "Charlie's Angles."

The series revolved around three female private investigators who were employees of a reclusive mulit-millionaire Charles Townsend. The women never met Townsend, who dispensed advice through a speaker phone. The character of Townsend referred to the women as "Angels". Farrah Fawcett shared billing with Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. John Forsythe provided the voice for the elusive Charlie. Although the three women shared billing, Farrah Fawcett emerged as a fan favorite. Despite leaving the show after one season, she remained one of "Charlie's Angels" in the minds of her fans.

Ms. Fawcett was also known as a iconic figure in popular culture. Sales of her poster netted her more in royalties than she received in salary for appearing in "Charlie's Angles". The poster of Fawcett, clad in a red swimsuit sold an estimated 5 million to 12 million copies. Women around the world copied her hairstyle. The poster remains an iconic image of the 70's and 80's.

In 1983, after a series of critical flops, Ms. Fawcett achieved critical acclaim for her portrayal a rape victim in the off-Broadway play "Extremities" by William Mastrosimone. That role was followed by her portrayal of a battered wife in the fact based television film "The Burning Bed". She continued her career playing famous and infamous real life characters.

The actress was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. On May 15,2009 a documentary entitled "Farrah's Story", filmed by the actress and her friend Alana Stewart was watched by nearly nine million viewers.

Farrah Fawcett was married to actor Lee Majors from 1973 - 1982. During that period she received credit for her work under the name Farrah Fawcett- Majors.

Farrah Fawcett has been linked romantically with actor Ryan O'Neal since 1982. In 1985 the pair had a son, Redmond O'Neal.

Farrah Fawcett will be remembered as an actress, a pop icon and most importantly, a strong woman who fought a brave battle with a devastating disease.

In the words of Charlie Townsend "Good night, Angel."

An Apology

June 24th 2009 03:52
In yesterday's post, I posted a video I found of a fan made trailer for Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland". In my haste to get my post online, I didn't pay close enough attention. While the pictures I linked to in the post were from the production, the video was not. It should never have been posted as it was because it left the reader with the impression that it was officially connected to the film.
Fortunately, a comment by a reader made me realize my error. My only excuse is that I am new to blogging, I was excited to see the pictures on EW.com and I learned a nifty new trick i.e. embedding a video. I suppose that's three excuses.

Regardless, thanks to Uther for pointing out my error and for actually taking time to read my posts. I hope you all can forgive my error and continue reading.
Thanks again for reading.

Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"

June 22nd 2009 20:42
Tim Burton has given us Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands and Willie Wonka. Next March, Burton and Depp with Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway to produce Burton's version of "Alice in Wonderland".

The concept of the story is a bit different from Lewis Carroll's book. Burton's Alice is 17 when she finds herself following a white rabbit down a hole to Wonderland, a place she had visited 10 years earlier. USA Today has published some concept art from the production that is amazing

Top 10 Chick Flicks

June 15th 2009 20:19
Chick flicks are great for those nights you have the house to yourself, either by chance or by design. These movies are best enjoyed with a bowl of popcorn or a pint of Ben & Jerry's, alone or with your best friend. Generally speaking, the man in your life won't be thrilled to share these with you. Guys just seemed to enjoy action and adventure more than sentiment. A few of these are hard to find on DVD but show up on television from time to time. These are my personal favorites, in no particular order.

10. "An Affair to Remember" (1957), Playboy Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant) meets Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) on board a ship sailing for the United States. Though both are involved with other people, they agree to meet on top of the Empire State Building. Fate steps in and the meeting never happens. The ending of this film is a real crying festival. I love this movie, the final scene never fails to move me

The thing about Eddie Murphy is that when he is good, he is outrageously good and when he is bad he is awful. There are some Eddie Murphy movies that you can watch over and over and enjoy every viewing like it was the first. "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Coming to America" are vintage Murphy that I personally enjoy. More recent offerings like the "Shrek" films and "Daddy Day Care" have found their way into my personal collection because they are good fun that I can share with my children. Others, like "Norbet" were so mean spirited that it made me cringe.

So it makes me wonder what this weekend's release of Eddie's latest "Imagine That" will bring to the table. The story revolves around a financial executive that is more involved with his Blackberry than his 7 year old daughter.(Does anyone else hear Cat Stevens singing?) According to the movie's website, Murphy's character experiences a "crisis of confidence" and his career starts to tank. He finds the solution to all of his problems in his daughter's imaginary world

"Revenge" is at Hand

June 9th 2009 18:23
I will be the first to tell you, I love Transformers. I was already an adult when the clever "robot in disguise" toys were first introduced in 1984. I didn't even have children but that didn't stop me from being fascinated by manipulating the toy to change it from a car to a robot and then back. Luckily, at that time I worked at a child care center and was able to indulge in my transformer passion without being considered completely foolish.

Transformers, for those who don't know were originally developed by the Japanese firm Takara Tomy. Hasbro purchased the line and the rest is history. There was a "Transformers"cartoon, a cereal, a line of toys that encompassed vehicles, animals and very nearly every object known to man and in 1986 an animated feature length movie "Transformers: The Movie

Billy Elliot Logo/Wikipedia

In recent years, many movies have made the transition from the big screen to the theater. This year there were three standout productions. "Nine to Five", "Shrek" and "Billy Elliot" were all nominated for Best Musical by the American Theater Wing. All three were by all accounts wonderful productions. In the end though only one could be the year's best musical. Winning one Tony is an honor but last night, "Billy Elliot, the Musical" took home 10 awards.

It's funny the way things from your childhood stay with you. I remember when Saturday meant watching cartoons from early in the morning until sometime around noon. Throughout the 70's and into the 80's, Sid and Marty Kroft created some very memorable programming. On of my favorites from the Kroft brothers was a show called "Land of the Lost".

The premise was simple enough. A widower and his two children are on a rafting trip when an earthquake occurs. The earthquake some how opens a rift in time and they are transported to a land populated by dinosaurs, ape man and an evil race of lizard like men called Sleestacks. The series revolved around the family trying to get back to their own time while exploring the land of the lost. Despite what you might think about the plausibility of the plot, the series survived for two years. Even more implausible, during one season, the father somehow disappears (presumably back to his own time). A short time later, the children are joined by their uncle, who had been searching for the family

The Passing of an Icon

June 4th 2009 17:23
This morning actor David Carradine was found dead in his hotel room in Bangkok where he was filming a movie. The 72 year old actor was best known for his portrayal of Shaolin monk Kwai Chang Caine, in the television series "Kung Fu". More recently though, he portrayed Bill in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill", Vols. 1 and 2.

For those too young to remember "Kung Fu", the series followed the adventures of Kwai Chang Caine, the orphaned son of a Chinese woman and an American man. Caine was raised by in a monastery by Shaolin monks and trained to be a Shaolin master. In the pilot, Caine's mentor Po is murdered by the nephew of the Chinese Emperor. Caine kills the nephew and is forced to flee to avoid the Emperor's assassins. He goes to America where he searches for his half brother in the Old West, arrned only with his skill in martial arts. The series was very popular and Carradine was so identified with the role that he recreated Caine in a feature length film, "Kung Fu:The Movie" ( 1986) and in the series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues"(1993-1995). Both the television series and the movie are available on DVD and are well worth checking out

We're a little different in voice and tone but we both love the movies. I hope you will decide to come and read my thoughts frequently.

Remaking The Taking of Pelham 123

June 3rd 2009 21:49
The first time I saw the trailer for "The Taking of Pelham 123" I have to admit that my first thought was that the title sounded vaguely familiar. I had heard the title before but I couldn't quite remember the film. As I watched the trailer and realized that the plot involved the hijacking of a subway car in New York City, it came to me.

"The Taking of Pelham 123" was originally released in 1974. Long before many of you were born. I'd tell you how old I was when original was in theaters but that would date me. Let's just say that there were still drive in theaters. The kind where you paid one price for the whole carload and parents would load up their station wagons with every kid in the neighborhood for a night at the drive in

Why I Love Pixar #15

June 1st 2009 19:36
I fell in love with the films produced by Pixar in 1995. For those who don't remember, that was the year they brought a cowboy named Woody and a hero named Buzz Lightyear to life. Before the house lights came back up in that darkened theater, Pixar "had a friend in me". As the years passed, Pixar continued to produce both full length features and animated shorts that have delighted both young and old fans.

Last November, we saw the first trailer for "Up" Pixar's latest offering. My daughter leaned over before it was finished running and whispered, "We'll be seeing it, right Mom?" Because even at her young age, she knows that I am in love with every movie I've ever seen from Pixar. "Up" is no exception
